It is always advised to sit straight and stand upright while walking. You should do so to have a proper posture. A good posture is an important part of your long-term health. It can prevent many injuries and back pain. It also makes you look good. If you sit with your back hunched then it will mess up the structure of your spine. A good posture is connected to the position of your spine. A correct posture should maintain the curves of your body and not increase them. The first step towards posture assessment is observation.

By observing you will be able to find structural abnormalities in your posture. Then you can proceed to correct those abnormalities and correct your posture. While assessing your posture, you need to focus on the symmetry of the anterior, posterior, and lateral views. The things you need to assess are:

  • Alignment of the head in frontal plane and side position. Check if the head is leaning or tilting to one side. 
  • Examine the spine for abnormalities in the lordosis or kyphosis. Look for a lateral shift in the spine, which can be an indicator of scoliosis.
  • Shoulder level symmetry in the frontal and sagittal plane.
  • Hip, knee, and ankle joints.
  • Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar curvature.

These are the few basic things that you can observe and assess on your own. This is a visual observation method and its advantage is that it does not require any equipment. But you cannot assess minor postural alterations by observing your posture from the naked eye. This method is not used for scientific research.

Disadvantages of poor posture:

Poor posture is bad for your health. It can affect your body, which can result in many problems. Some of them are:

  1. Back pain– Slouching or slumping can misalign your skeletal system. It increases the pressure on your spine, which makes it prone to injuries. Sitting with your back hunched for a long period can cause tightness and stiffness.
  • Breathing issues– Poor posture can restrict your ribcage and that can compress the diaphragm. It can reduce your lung capacity, which can lead to shallow breathing and fatigue.
  • Restricted movement– Poor posture can decrease the flexibility of your spine and cause stiffness in it. It can also affect the movement of your joints. It can weaken your muscles, cause imbalance, and poor alignment of hips.
  • Headaches– Poor posture can strain your muscles and put pressure on the nerves near them. The stress on the nerves can cause headaches and muscle spasms.
